Snowshoeing at Lundy Lake

Lundy Canyon is located off Hwy 395, about 7 miles north of Lee Vining.  Follow the road for about 3 miles until you reach the gate.  During the winter, the road is closed at this point, the junction with the road leading to a campground.  During the summer, the road is accessible for another 3 miles and ends at the trailhead, which leads deep into the heart of the Sierra.

On the way home from ice climbing, we stopped here to snowshoe around the lake.  There weren’t any other people around.  It was a great day to experience the surrounding mountains covered in snow, to hear the sound of birds singing to the morning, to see the ghostly shapes of dormant aspen trees, to feel the light breeze flowing here and there, and to observe the footprints left by wildlife.
