Near Natural Bridges State Beach in Santa Cruz, in a canyon filled with eucalyptus trees, you will find an amazing wonder between October and January. During this time, hundreds of monarch butterflies come from colder areas to enjoy the mild coast weather. The eucalyptus trees provide shelter for the butterflies, protection from the elements, and food. You’ll see them flying around during the warmer days peppering the blue sky with their orange and black color. On colder days, they will form clusters to stay warm. They can’t fly unless their body temperature is around 55°F, and they can’t even crawl around 40°F.
